Andi C. Buchanan is a writer of mostly speculative fiction, living in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt. Their work engages with imagining communities, accessible environments, found families, and murderous water horses.
Winner of a Sir Julius Vogel Award, their genre-blending novella “From a Shadow Grave” explores a historical murder, the legends surrounding it, and what might have been. Their novel Sanctuary (Robot Dinosaur Press, 2022) tells the story of a queer, neurodivergent found-family who live in a haunted house.
Andi’s short fiction is published in Fireside, Mermaids Monthly, Cossmass Infinities, Apex, takahē, and more. Their non-fiction has been published in Pantograph Punch and the Otherhood anthology from Massey University Press.
Andi is the recipient of Toi Pōneke’s 2026 d/Deaf and/or Disabled Artist Development Residency. They have an MA in English from Victoria University of Wellington. In 2024 they curated and performed in the LitCrawl event “I’m disabled… so of course I’m a villain!”.
Andi’s short fiction has previously been published in Fireside, Cossmass Infinities, Apex, and more. When not writing they enjoy cheese, knitting, and obeying the cat. They also write contemporary fantasy / sapphic romance as Andi R. Christopher.
